01 / Interface

Interface

Panels, status bar, toolbar, themes, and overall application layout.

Navigator Panel
Layers, Surfaces, and Projects tabs. Drag to reorder layers. Right-click any row for contextual actions.
Properties Panel
Live area, perimeter, and length for the selected object or layer — in both 2D and 3D. Click any value to change its unit.
Panorama Panel
Elevation profiles for any line on the map. Overlay multiple DEMs on the same chart. A live crosshair reads station and elevation. Watershed statistics appear as a dedicated tab.
Configurable Toolbar
Place it anywhere — four corners, four edge-middles, or free-floating — in any of four looks: a row of buttons, or icon cards down the side, across, or named. Position and look are chosen independently. Cards group the tools and wear the one last used inside them. Auto-hides until needed, and keeps clear of docked panels and the status bar.
Status Bar
Cursor coordinates, ground elevation, UTM zone, map scale, and eye altitude. Object count and active layer. Click any value to cycle its unit.
Project Tabs
Open multiple projects as tabs. Drag to reorder, or tear a tab off into its own window.
Appearance & Themes
12 built-in themes with 8 customisable colour slots. Cursor, selection, and draft overlay colours set independently. Exports with Settings.
Settings Panel
Search across all settings. Export and import a configuration file — useful for moving settings between machines.
App-Wide Units
Set metric or imperial globally — all measurements follow. Click any individual value to convert it independently of the rest.
Notifications
Notifications for every background operation — imports, exports, saves, downloads. Errors in red; warnings in amber.

Panorama Overview
Tables for Groups, Layers, Images, Surfaces, Maps, Modifiers, and Masks, each with counts, search, a visibility filter, and column pickers. Multi-select rows to hide, lock, export, or delete.
Panorama Attributes
One table per selected layer, or one row per vertex with coordinates and terrain elevation. Click a row to mark that point on the map.
Panel Styles
Panels can render as frosted glass over the map, with independent transparency, tint, and blur. Set per surface.
Panel Edges
Give docked panels a gap and rounded corners so they sit off the window edge like floating cards, with an optional soft shadow.
Draw Order
The whole map stack in one popup. Drag any drawing, image, surface, or terrain map, or use Front and Back.
Layer Hierarchy
Set which kinds of layer sit above which. The default is drawings, contours, photos, then terrain maps.
File Manager
Recent projects with folder paths, timestamps, and unsaved or missing-file indicators.

GPU Acceleration
Terrain analysis runs on the GPU when available — slope, aspect, relief, landforms, and others. No setup required; faster on capable hardware.
Elevation Downloads
Large elevation files download quickly. Downloads resume automatically if interrupted.
Surface Assembly
Downloaded elevation data combines and crops into a single surface quickly, even for large areas.
Vector Layer Performance
Layers with thousands of features stay responsive. Long operations run in the background without blocking the UI.
Background Processing
Map generation and long tasks run in the background. Keep working while terrain processes.
Project Files
Projects save quickly, even when large. One file holds everything — layers, DEMs, images, settings, and undo history. No sidecar folders or companion files.
03 / Tools

Tools

Drawing and editing tools available in the toolbar.

Polyline Tool
Place vertices by clicking. Extend any open line with Ctrl+right-click. Alt closes or reopens a selected line.
Polygon Tool
Draw freeform or switch to rectangle, square, or circle from the mode picker.
Transform Tool
Three sub-modes — Move, Rotate, Scale. Pick a base point; the second click applies. Ctrl+drag duplicates instead of moving.
Grade Path Tool
Traces a path along terrain at a set gradient. Pick a start point, set the max grade and vertex interval.
Offset Tool
Parallel offsets with a live preview. Fixed distance or fill mode. Pairs mode fills the space between any two objects.
Fillet Tool
Rounds or chamfers the corner between two lines or polygon edges. Can bridge two separate lines into one.
Trim Tool
Four modes: Quick Trim, Edge Trim, Line Trim, and Cut. Each uses a different selection method — fence, hover-click, or boundary pick.
Water Drop Tool
Click any point on terrain to trace water's path downhill to the edge, through hollows and basins.
Dynamic Input
Type exact distances, angles, areas, or scale factors mid-operation. Press U to cycle units. Available across all drawing and transform tools.
Cursor Readouts
The box at the cursor carries the line’s total length alongside the stretch in progress, plus the slope of that stretch where an elevation map lies beneath — plus for uphill, minus for down. Each reading switches off on its own. U cycles metres, feet, kilometres and miles, and percent, degrees or ratio for slope.
Vertex Editing
Ctrl+right-click an edge to add a vertex, or an existing vertex to remove it. Nudge position with the arrow keys.
Grade Lock
Holds a line to a constant slope over the terrain. The Polyline and Polygon tools and vertex dragging all keep to the set grade. Configurable search distance and segment length.
Angle Readout & Snap
Each segment shows its bearing beside its length. Shift snaps to bearing steps. Type length and angle together, e.g. 100,45.
Transfer & Convert
Move or copy a shape to another layer, converting to match — an area onto a lines layer becomes a closed outline, and the reverse. Whole layers convert too.
Select Similar
Select every shape of the same kind on a layer at once.
04 / Labels

Labels

Annotations drawn on the map at an object's vertices and segments.

Elevation Labels
Each vertex shows its elevation, sampled from the terrain beneath.
Slope Labels
Each segment shows its slope in percent, degrees, or ratio, with optional downhill flow arrows and slope-band colours.
Measurement Labels
Each segment shows its length, and closed shapes show their area at the centre.
Label Sizing
A fixed on-screen size that holds while zooming, or a real-world size pinned to the ground.
Label Styling
Colour, bold, drop shadow, side, offset, and stacked-or-inline layout, set per label type.
Overlap Trimming
Colliding labels are dropped so a zoomed-out drawing stays readable.
Quick Measurement
Select any lines or shapes and press M to annotate. M again clears; U cycles units.
05 / Base Maps

Base Maps

Terrain analysis maps generated from a DEM, plus background basemaps and batch generation.

Contours
Interval and index contours with separate colours and weights. Denoise control for cleaner output on rough terrain.
Slope
Colour-coded slope bands with configurable thresholds and custom palettes. Display in degrees, percentage, or ratio.
Aspect
Shows which direction each part of the terrain faces — useful for solar and wind analysis.
Relief
Elevation bands with configurable palettes — smooth or stepped.
Landforms
Classifies terrain into ridges, valleys, shoulders, footslopes, and flats.
Morphometry
Shows where the surface is concave, convex, or planar — in both plan and profile.
Polyhedral
A faceted view of terrain that makes gradient and structure immediately readable.
Drainage
Stream network grouped by flow order. Adding an order adds detail — a finer, denser network with a new smaller order each time. Each order takes a distinct colour.
Watersheds Map
Catchment basin outlines from the DEM. Configurable minimum size, fill, outline, and opacity.
Elevation
Terrain colour map with nine palettes, brightness and sun-shading. The height range auto-fits, or pin it to compare sites side by side.
Wind Exposure
Shows which ground the wind reaches and which sits in shelter. All directions at once, or one named wind. Adjustable look-ahead distance, six colour schemes, and a legend against the map’s own values. Tick several compass directions to export one file each.
Valley Depth
How far below the surrounding ridges each point sits. Nine-step colour ramp with an optional relief blend.
Extract Features
Convert a surface’s minor contours, major contours, or both into editable lines on a new layer.
Per-Range Areas
Slope, Aspect, Landforms, Morphometry, and Valley Depth report the ground area of each range, with per-range KMZ export.
DEM Modifiers
Resampling (change pixel resolution) and smoothing (reduce noise in elevation data) as non-destructive child layers. All maps update automatically when a modifier changes.
Basemaps Panel
Generate or export all terrain maps in one operation. Select what you need, set a resolution, export as KMZ or GeoTIFF.
Background Basemaps
Street, Satellite, Hybrid, Topographic, or solid-colour backgrounds. Tiles cache for offline use. Optional grid overlay with configurable spacing.
06 / Watershed Analysis

Watershed Analysis

Catchment basins, focus areas, runoff methods, and automatic soil and precipitation data for US terrain.

Catchment Basin Computation
Derives all catchment basins from a DEM by minimum size. Each sub-basin gets a consistent ID across the map, statistics table, and exported files.
Focus Areas
Multiple independent focus areas per surface. Pick what each area drains from — road, fence line, any polyline. Each computes and colours independently.
Manual Watershed Mode
Assign your own polygons as watersheds. Each shows live area, slope, and runoff. Works independently of Focus mode.
Spread & Channels
Each focus area shows its Spread — the ground its water can reach — and its Channels, the flow lines leaving it. Both toggle per area.
Runoff Methods
Rational, Rational (CN), NRCS (CN), Basic Storm, and Annual Yield. Each area uses its own method. The statistics table adapts to show only what's relevant.
NOAA Precipitation Data US
Fetches official NOAA precipitation tables for your location. Pick storm duration and return period — rainfall fills in automatically.
Soil & Land-Cover Detection US
Looks up soil and land-cover data for your area and derives runoff values. No manual table lookups.
Watershed Statistics Panel
Live statistics in the Panorama panel — area, mean slope, longest flow path, runoff volume, peak flow. Add impermeable area as a value or percentage. Exports to CSV.
Watershed KMZ Export
Export any focus area or sub-basin to Google Earth — styled outline, label, and full statistics included.
Per-Sub-Basin Inputs
Set runoff values per sub-basin, not just the whole area. Double-click to name any sub-basin. Both persist with the project.
07 / Pipe Networks

Pipe Networks

Design, size, and cost water reticulation over the terrain — from a quick concept layout to a full hydraulic simulation.

Draw or Convert
Any open line becomes a pipe. Convert from the right-click menu, or draw onto a pipe layer directly.
Concept & Detail Modes
Concept sizes a layout quickly for early design. Detail runs a full hydraulic simulation. Set per network; the app switches to Detail when the layout requires it.
Node Roles
Any point can be a source, outlet, junction, valve, or fitting, and can hold more than one role. Outlets and valves can sit anywhere along a pipe.
Source Types
Generic, Dam, Tank, and Well. Dams and tanks hold a volume that fills and drains for time-based design. Wells are pumped.
Pumps
Each source can carry a pump — a catalogue pump with its curve, or a fixed lift. A low dam can pump to a high tank that then gravity-feeds the field.
Multiple Linked Sources
Chain sources that feed each other, with looped networks, storage, and zone scheduling over a day.
Real Valves
PRV, PSV, FCV, and TCV, placed anywhere in the network.
Pipe Sizing
Size to a target pressure or a target flow. Sizing accounts for the highest pressure along a run.
Pipe Catalogue
Manufacturer catalogues plus generic PVC, HDPE, and PE in common sizes. Assign in batch or override a single pipe.
Pump Catalogue
Australian and US manufacturer pumps, searchable by maker.
Per-Stretch Sizing
A single pipe can carry a different bore and material on each stretch. Click a stretch to select it alone.
Subdivide into Stick Lengths
Break a pipe into fixed lengths with a fitting at every join. Per pipe, in batch, or while drawing.
Fittings
Bends become elbows by default, each charged its own pressure loss by angle.
Terrain-Following Lengths
Sizing, pressure results, and quantities use the true length over the ground, not the map distance.
Bill of Quantities
Pipes, valves, fittings, and tank sources listed by item, material, bore, class, length, and quantity. Pipes count by length. Units switch per column.
Manufacturer Part Links
Fitting rows link to the manufacturer’s product page.
Network Tables
A per-pipe table and a per-outlet table with cyclable units, search, resizable columns, and double-click rename.
Profile Tab
A ground-following cross-section of any pipe run, with the pipe’s own grade line and hydraulic energy line drawn against the terrain. Drag a point on the chart and pressure updates before you let go. A synced table lists every point — distance, elevation, role, fittings, required pressure, flow — editable and sortable. Recolour the legend; export the chart as an image.
Editable Bill
Work the bill, not just read it. Click a stretch’s material, bore or class to pick from the catalogue; change what a fitting is, what a valve does, or which pump a tank carries. Changes show on the Pipe Network and Profile too.
Order Lengths & Offcut
Set a pipe’s bought-in length — 6 m sticks, say — and the bill states how many lengths to order and what is left over.
Outlet Verdicts
Two verdict columns: whether an outlet got the pressure it needed, and whether a stretch delivers everything downstream of it. The tab also names the next thing needed to finish a run, and points at where to set it.
Per-Outlet Pressure
Type each outlet’s own required pressure in the table, instead of one figure for the whole run.
On the Map
Node and pipe labels at real-world size, an adjustable colour legend, and flow in L/s or GPM.
Gap Warnings
Routes crossing gaps in elevation data are flagged, with affected lengths reported as a minimum.
Network Export
Export the whole network to Google Earth as KMZ.

Road, channel, dam, and general grading surfaces with live cut/fill volumes — in active development.

Road Surface
Full road cross-section along any centreline — carriageway, shoulder, batter, ditches. Per-zone statistics and KMZ export.
Channel Surface
Trapezoidal, V-shape, Rectangular, and Swale profiles. Optional berms on each side. Batters intersect terrain automatically.
Dam Surface
Earth dam cross-sections along any centreline — crest, batters, spillway. Per-zone statistics included.
General Grading
Grade any geometry to a flat elevation, a slope percentage, a fill distance, or a reference surface. Can grade both sides of a polygon independently.
Live Cut/Fill Volumes
Cut and fill volumes update as you edit. Per-zone breakdown for roads, channels, and dams.
Grading Maps
Run contours, slope, relief, and other terrain maps on top of a graded surface. Fill map shows each grading's footprint in its own colour.
09 / Modifiers

Modifiers

Live, non-destructive modifiers attached to any layer. Stackable, reorderable, and removable at any time. Source geometry is never altered.

Spline
Converts a line or polygon layer into a smooth spline. Adjustable tension. Commit as a new layer or bake back into the source.
Fillet
Rounds corners across an entire layer by angle range. Set separate radii for different angle thresholds.
Simplify
Reduces vertex count on lines and polygons. Preview updates as you adjust the tolerance.
Slope
Colour-codes lines by slope. Configurable bands with separate colours and KML export per band. Requires a DEM over the layer.
Horizontal Grade Lock
Keeps a line at a consistent grade along terrain. Configurable tolerance and minimum segment length.
Offset
Generates parallel offsets as a non-destructive modifier. Fixed distance or fill mode. Pairs mode fills between any two objects on the map.
Masks
Restrict terrain maps to specific areas. Include or Exclude mode. Multiple masks per layer, all updating as objects move.
Modifier Stacks
Stack modifiers in any order on a single layer. Copy a stack to another layer with Alt+C / Alt+V. Each modifier has its own toggle.
Display Order Override
Draw any layer or orthophoto above or below terrain, independent of its position in the layer tree.
Layout — Keyline
Row patterns across a field at a target grade. Multi-pattern divides a field into sub-areas — by drainage, slope direction, or best fit — each with its own pattern. Headlands leave a turning buffer inside the field edge. Reshaping the main line re-flows the pattern.
Layout — Contour
Row patterns following the contour at a set interval, with a minimum gap.
Point Array
Scatters points across a layer’s shapes, updating as shapes move. After committing, each point stays individually editable.
Linked Modifiers
Paste a modifier onto another layer as a live link. A change on either side updates both, as one undo step.
Commit Workflow
Commit a modifier to geometry, either onto a new layer or in place. Commit All applies a whole stack. Measurements, exports, and selection follow the modified shape.

Imagery

Aerial and drone orthophotos, and imported reference images.

Large Orthophoto Import
Georeferenced photos place themselves. Files up to around 5 GB import and pan smoothly.
Progressive Detail
A photo appears at low detail and sharpens in stages, prioritising the area in view. Work can start before conversion finishes.
Footprint Preview
The import dialog outlines the file on the map, tracing the edge of valid data — skipping empty corners and interior holes.
Orthophoto Masks
Keep or cut what falls inside an area, with an optional feathered edge. Rectangles, circles, freehand, or an existing shape. The original image is unaltered.
Resample Control
Trade detail against memory and speed on very large images.
Adjust Mode
Reposition and rotate a non-georeferenced image by hand.
Image Merge
Combine overlapping orthophotos or imported images into a single image.
Create Surface from a Photo
Source web elevation matching an orthophoto’s footprint in one action.
Draw Order
Place each photo in the map stack independently, above or below terrain maps and drawings.
Photo Areas
The Overview panel reports each photo’s covered area, excluding empty regions.

Web Elevation Sources
60+ built-in elevation providers catalogued by country. Draw an area on the map and download in one step. Tiles combine automatically into a single surface, with optional crop and modifier defaults.
Create Surface from Vectors
Build a DEM from any height-carrying vector data — layers, shapefiles, or survey CSV. Choose the elevation attribute if it isn't Z.
Connections Panel
Browse catalogues of elevation and basemap services grouped by country. Covers standard GIS service types and national providers. Results filter as you search.
USA Map Catalogue
USGS topo maps, NAIP aerial imagery, watershed boundaries, rivers, wetlands, FEMA flood zones, cropland, land cover, and BLM allotments — all from the Connections panel.
Offline Tile Cache
Save basemap tiles for offline use. Draw a rectangle to capture a region at chosen zoom levels.
Automatic Elevation Provider Selection
Create Surface pre-selects the right elevation provider for wherever the map is centred.
New Zealand — LINZ NZ
High-resolution national elevation from Land Information New Zealand. Requires your own API key.
Switzerland — swisstopo CH
Swiss national elevation at 0.5 m and 2 m, cropped to a drawn area at full detail.

Import

Elevation files, vector formats, images, and clipboard data.

Elevation Import
GeoTIFF, ASCII grid, SRTM, BIL, and GeoPackage formats. Drop files or press I. Import multiple files as a merged surface or as separate layers.
KML & KMZ Import
Drop or press I. Layer folder structure and names are preserved. Paste KML directly from Google Earth with Ctrl+V.
Shapefile Import
Drop a folder or .shp file. All attributes import; elevation values are preserved where present.
GeoPackage Import
Each vector table lands as a separate layer group. Elevation-only files are routed to surfaces.
GeoJSON Import
Drop, press I, or paste from the clipboard. Imports as a named layer group with zoom-to-data.
Image Import
Drop PNG, JPEG, or BMP onto the map. Reposition and rotate in Adjust mode. Georeferenced images land with their spatial reference intact.
Merge Elevation Layers
Select two or more elevation layers and merge into one. Keep or discard the originals.
Cross-Window Paste
Copy a layer from one project window and paste into another. Geometry, styles, modifiers, and metadata all transfer.
Import Crop
Crop elevation files and photos before importing. The area can come from the map view, selected objects, a drawn shape, or a polygon file.
Legacy Project Import
Projects from the earlier R.EARTH web application open as new desktop projects, with a summary of anything that could not be carried across.
Survey CSV
Point data with coordinates and heights, ready to build a surface from.

Export

KMZ, GeoTIFF, CSV, batch export, and Google Earth sync.

KMZ Export
Export any layer, surface, or terrain map to KMZ. Watershed exports include styled outlines, labels, and full statistics.
GeoTIFF Export
Export terrain maps or raw elevation surfaces as georeferenced GeoTIFFs. Compatible with any GIS software. Configurable resolution per export.
CSV Layer Attributes
Export measurements for any vector layer or group — 2D and 3D area, perimeter, length. One row per layer, stable column order.
Watershed Table CSV
Saves the full watershed statistics table — all sub-basins and columns — to CSV in the current unit settings.
Batch Export
Export vectors, images, DEMs, and terrain maps in one operation. Searchable item tree with a configurable destination folder.
Google Earth Sync
Exported KMZ files can auto-open in Google Earth. Configurable per export type and destination folder in Settings → Export.
Background Export
Exports run without blocking the map. Progress is shown and long exports can be cancelled.
Watershed Scenario Batch
One export per combination of focus area, storm duration, and return period, with matching rainfall filled in. One file per scenario, or combined.
Per-Object Export
Export a single object from its right-click menu, as KMZ or attributes.

Misc

Snapping, context menus, keyboard shortcuts, undo, and other quality-of-life features.

Snapping
Configurable snap targets: DEM surface, lines, polygons, points — each toggleable independently. Tolerance, marker size, and hover delay adjustable in Settings.
Selection Cycling
When objects overlap, a popup lists each one. Click a row to pick it. Shift+V toggles cycling on or off.
Marquee Selection
Drag to select multiple objects on the map or across Layers, Surfaces, and Projects lists.
Map Right-Click Menu
Right-click anywhere on the map to start a tool, copy coordinates, read elevation, or access terrain and watershed actions.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Every action is rebindable. Search by keyword, reset individually or all at once. Bindings export and import with Settings.
Undo / Redo
Full undo history across all drawing and editing. Complex operations collapse into single entries. History persists with the project file.
Scale Bar & Grid
Scale bar with click-to-cycle units. Grid overlay in three modes — automatic, fixed pixel, or ground spacing — with configurable colours.
Projects Library
Reference other R.EARTH projects as read-only overlays on the map — their layers, images, and terrain maps — without opening them.
Crash Recovery
If the app closes unexpectedly, the next launch detects unsaved work and offers to recover it.
In-App Updates
Checks for updates on launch. A prompt appears when a new version is available. Manual check in Profile at any time.
Multi-Select Layer Actions
Right-click several layers or groups to style, commit, add a modifier, rename, duplicate, convert, merge, group, export, or delete them together.
Object Right-Click Menu
A menu matched to the selected shape: create a surface over its outline, measurements, close or open a line, transforms, terrain maps, modifiers, and style. Inapplicable entries are greyed, not hidden.
Configurable Menus
Enable, disable, and reorder entries in every context menu, dividers included.
Layer Templates
Save a configured layer as a template and reuse it in any project.
Layer List Density
Ctrl+wheel over the Layers list packs rows tighter or looser.
Diagnostics
Cache use with its own clear controls. Clearing is safe; working copies rebuild on next open.
